Its origins : The Alum stone is a translucent white ore. It is extracted from alunite quarries, most often located in Syria but also on the Mediterranean coast. This stone has been used since Antiquity for its multiple virtues.

Its nature : Caution: There are two types of alum stones: potassium alum and ammonium alum. There is no way of telling them apart by their appearance, only by their composition. Both contain aluminium, but in different forms, which does not produce the same effect!

The potassium Alum is an entirely natural stone. It is also called "potassium and aluminium sulfate" or "potassium double sulfate of aluminium hydroxide". Aluminium hydroxide is a stable form of aluminium that doesn't stick to the skin. It is eliminated naturally by perspiration or by taking a shower. It is chemically inert (it does not chemically react as is). Therefore it does not release aluminium (contrary to the aluminium chloride hydrates contained in common deodorants). In addition, aluminium in its hydroxide or oxide form (alumina) is the main component of all types of clay and is absolutely harmless to the body. In other words, the potassium Alum's action is only cutaneous, nothing goes into the blood.

Ammonium Alum, on the contrary, is made from ammonium salts, derived from the heavy chemical industry in Asia (a by-product of caprolactam, from nylon factories, among others), which are reagglomerated, then sold under this name. It is therefore an entirely synthetic stone, whose aluminium is not hydrated and can stick to the skin. The passing of aluminium into the blood is a problem (also by vaccinations and food) as it has been proven that the molecules accumulate in the brain and this phenomena is one of the causes of Alzheimer's disease.
Nowadays, only aluminium chlorohydrate is suspected of passing into the blood.

Cosmetic benefits : The (natural) potassium Alum stone is above all an excellent deodorant! Antiseptic, it helps combat the bacteria responsible for perspiration's bad smell, without covering it with another. Astringent, it tightens pores and firms tissue, which naturally limits perspiration without blocking it, as the skin continues to breathe.
It also stops the bleeding of small cuts or scratches, calms razor burn, and soothes the skin after epilation.
It can also solve oral and dental problems such as canker sores, abscesses, sore gums...
Finally, it is thought to help against spots such as acne, ringworm, candidiasis, and to soothe mosquito bites.

In summary : A natural "miracle" product to favour as a deodorant. Just make sure to chose a "potassium Alum" stone (from Syria or the Mediterranean coast), and not an "ammonium Alum" stone.


Use: Moisten the Alum stone before applying it to the areas of the body you wish to treat (armpits, forehead, hands, feet, intimate parts...). Be careful with sensitive skins: avoid applying it too early after the shaving or epilation, as it may cause irritation.
Always replace it in a dry place after use (or it might disintegrate). Also be careful not to drop it: this rock crystal breaks easily. If you ever break it, retrieve the pieces and break them into a fine powder. You can add 2 pinches of this powder to white laundry loads to restore the laundry's luminosity.
